Need for Speed Underground 2


The sequel to Need for Speed Underground has big shoes to fill, and it does so admirably, with vastly improved graphics, new gameplay modes, and an improved interface. The demo also pushes beyond the scope of the original, offering a "free roam" mode to explore the cityscape and challenge competitors at will, two types of "quick races" on two different tracks, and the ability to race other drivers online.
The graphics are the most obvious improvement. We only can describe them as truly awesome, even on lower settings. Lights on the bridge sparkle in the night sky, and mannequins in store windows catch your eye as you blaze past. Little things, such as pumping your hydraulics and bouncing down the avenue, make the experience even more fun. Racing is arcade style (it's awfully hard to destroy your car) and easy to learn, yet power drifting is an acquired skill that keeps the learning curve gradual, but long. The only knocks on this top-notch driving game are the ubiquitous product placements (a Cingular messaging system?), high system requirements, and large download size. Considering the depth and quality of Need for Speed Underground 2, though, most gamers can forgive those details.

    DreamLight Photo Editor 4.0


    DreamLight Photo Editor is like many image-editing tools. It adds dreamlike effects to your photos: filters like Light, Star, Amazing, and so on, and backgrounds, borders, and print options. The translated English is quirky and the support is thin, but it does what it's supposed to and seems easy enough to use. We wish it had multiple undos, but you can only undo the most recent change.
    If your PC is, say, less than five years old and came with a typical software bundle, you probably already have an image editor that can do most everything DreamLight does, though it may take you a couple of minutes to figure out how to do it and a couple of tries to get it right. And, while DreamLight is free to try for 30 days, it's $39.95 to buy, which is a lot, considering the competition.
    Still, if you like the sort of effects DreamLight produces in your photos and you don't already have an image editor or are simply too intimidated by its complexity (there's a reason why "photoshop" is a verb), then DreamLight might be for you. And we like the developer's idea of giving it as a gift to someone who has a computer but can't and won't ever get past the most basic operations. Most of us know someone like that--Grandma, for instance--who'd love to be able to enhance and share family photos, if only she could get the darn machine to do it for her.

Super Home Suite comes with a huge library of interior and exterior objects, and the built-in editor can help you add more. Changing wall materials is simple too. Most exciting, you can instantly preview your creation in 3D under several kinds of lighting. The catch? The trial version is too stingy. It's one thing not to let users save their plans, but disabling tools, objects, and functions (including Undo!) makes evaluating the program very difficult. Nevertheless, we were impressed enough with Super Home Suite to go out on a limb. If there's a white picket fence in your future, Super Home Suite is worth a close look.
